Footy legend David Parkin climbed out of his sick bed to deliver some thought-provoking words about leadership at the fourth Taverners night for members at the Kingston Hotel last June.

Members and guests packed into the Kingston’s dining room to hear both Parkin and former Victorian Test spinner and selector Jim Higgs reflect on their respective sports in what turned out to be yet another fascinating evening.

At almost the 11th hour, David advised committee member and organiser Kevan Carroll that he was a most unlikely starter because of a debilitating bout of the dreaded lurgi.

But always the consummate professional, the Hawthorn veteran and AFL super coach dosed himself with what must have been a magic potion – not on the banned list, of course - and fronted an expectant audience, which was armed with numerous questions.

Jim also talked about leadership at State and Test level and the demands of being a selector, particularly in light of this year’s Ashes series that is certain to throw just as much spotlight on the selection panel as the players themselves.
