Victoria Branch History

Picture
In August 1982 the Victorian Branch of The Lord’s Taverners was founded, the second in Australia behind NSW.

The Executive comprised:

President Sir Bernard Callinan, Chairman John MacKinnon and Secretary Andrew Buckle.

The Committee included Sheila Scotter, Jim Thompson, Keith Burnham, Frank Tyson and Mike Parker.

Numbers were allocated to members in the custom of the parent body and were jealously guarded; they could never be reallocated to other members.

The first XI was:

LT1 Ian Johnson CBE (dec'd)

LT2 Robert Parish CMG, OBE (dec'd)

LT3 John MacKinnon

LT4 Sir Bernard Callinan AC, CBE, DSO, MC (dec'd)

LT5 Frank Tyson

LT6 Cdr Michael Parker CVO (dec'd)

LT7 The Hon Tony Street

LT8 Dr Ted Cordner (dec'd)

LT9 Clive Smith

LT10 Andrew Buckle OAM

LT11 Sir Robert Southey CMG (dec'd)

LT12 The twelfth man HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT

1982 was notable for the first 'Boxing Day Breakfast'.  Guest speakers were Henry Blofeld and Max Walker.  About 70 were in attendance. England won the Test by three runs.

Other events included the famous indoor cricket match at the Regent Hotel, the inaugural cricket match against the MCC XXIX Club and various fund raising cocktail parties.

Funds raised were directed towards the Lord Mayor's Camp at Portsea (provision of cricket pitches and equipment) and also the Victorian School for Deaf Children.

In July 1984 Melbourne hosted the first National Council meeting at Gordon Place. Those present included John Darling (National Chairman), John Varley (Chief Executive and Secretary) and delegates from WA (2), QLD (2), NSW (2) and VIC (Messrs MacKinnon and Tyson).

At this meeting, it was agreed that a National Newsletter should be produced in the form of a magazine, to be edited by Frank Tyson. This annual publication, The Tavener, has beem maintained to the current day and provides a valuable and vivid record of The Lord's Taverners activities post 1984.
