Sunny conditions greeted all attending and competing in the MAACA Division 1 and 2 Grand Finals, hosted by Moorabbin CC at Moorleigh Reserve, East Bentleigh.

The Division 2 Grand Final was the first match, featuring Mount Waverley Uniting vs Maiden Gully Marist for a 9am start, after an Acknowledgement of Country around a Walk About Wicket silk. Unfortunately the Bendigo team’s bus broke down at Malmsbury, delaying play by an hour. It was a mad scramble to co-ordinate transport and a credit to Maiden Gully’s team managers to get the players to the game.

Sent in to bat in a shortened 20 over game, Maiden Gully Marist managed 8/61(cc). Mount Waverley Uniting passed them one wicket down to claim the Kev O’Byrne Shield for 2022/23. Player of the Match went to Andrew Kendall from Mt. Waverley Uniting, claiming 3/3 off his 2 overs.

The Division 1 Grand Final pitted reigning premiers Williamstown against Carrum Downs in a 30 over a side match.

Williamstown, boasting four Victorian Vikings players, elected to bat and posted a very strong 2/186. Three batsmen, Pat Wheeler (42*), Richard Curtis (40*) and Lukas Woodhouse (40*) were retired not out and twelve Carrum Downs players were given a bowl.

Facing a powerful bowling attack led by Woodhouse and Wheeler, Carrum Downs fought in great spirit against quality bowling, finishing short on 7/119. Top scorer was Rod Pettitt (38*) and Player of the Match went to Woodhouse who backed up his 40* with 3/6 off 5 overs of express pace.

Williamstown produced a “Three-peat” in taking out the 2022/23 Taverners Victoria / MAACA - Division 1, Bill Stafford Shield. Fantastic talent was on display. It was an honour to witness and for Taverners Victoria to be the Major Partner, supporting Victorian All Abilities cricket.

Well done to all MAACA Players, the umpires, MAACA and Moorabbin CC Officials for producing a fantastic Grand Final Day. The standard and spirit of cricket displayed was a wonderful credit to the four teams competing for Premiership glory.

Next year it is planned to include a Division 3 Grand Final to be played on an adjoining ground at Moorleigh Reserve, to give these MAACA participants a taste of Finals excitement.
