At Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club
A near capacity crowd gathered and were highly entertained by our special Guest Speakers, Annabel and Will Sutherland. Australian Cricket selector, Tony Dodemaide introduced the pair with glowing accolades after main course. Our MC, Ron Steiner carried the audience on a journey through their short careers, from back yard bruises and tantrums, through to their State, BBL, WPL and International cricket experiences.
Insights and Q&A with the Sutherlands
- Annabel and Will come from a talented, competitive sporting family.
- Both players could have succeeded in an AFL career but chose cricket.
- Younger brother Tom is a Scratch Golfer and aiming to go Pro.
- Both are very happy developing as All Rounders rather than being a specialist batter or bowler. It keeps them in the game for longer.
- Will has played 2 ODIs for Australia. His biggest goal is to play Test Cricket. He admits there are a lot of players ahead of him.
- With Australia's rotation policy to rest our best players, that opening may not be too far away according to Tony Dodemaide!
- Annabel has enjoyed some captaincy opportunities at high levels and like Will, is very happy to take on more.
- She feels blessed playing with many of the best cricketers in the world and is soaking up as much as she can from the likes of Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry.
- Will on bowling fast - as a kid this was his total obsession.
- Now after overcoming a back stress fracture, he is focussing on tweaking his action to improve and hoping to add a few extra clicks.
- There's great sibling rivalry driving each other on to improve and succeed. Huge bragging rights are up for grabs, particularly in the BBL between the Stars and the Renegades!
