An outstanding Breakfast befitting a famous Test match.
Over 200 Taverners Members and guests packed the Yarra Park Room for an outstanding Boxing Day Test Breakfast function at the MCG. With unprecedented demand for one of the most anticipated Test series in years, a large contingent of Melbourne's Indian cricket loving community provided a welcome boost to the room.
Under the guidance of our master MC, Ron Steiner, Special Guest Jim Maxwell, ABC Radio chief cricket commentator, Australian Sports Hall of Fame Member and President of The Primary Club of Australia, had the room entranced for close to an hour. Jim also signed copies of his latest book, an autobiography "The Sounds of Summer", which were auctioned off along with eight AUS v IND Test Series 2024/25 Caps signed by the Australian Men's Test Team. Other signed cricket memorabilia from Bradman, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, V.V.S. Laxman, Aussie men's and women's ODI shirts and Peter Siddle Hat trick Stumps were also snapped up by eager bidders.
The morning also included interviews with two MAACA All Abilities cricketers, the first being Vikram Jholl from Moorabbin CC, who was the catalyst to the formation of the Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association fifteen years ago. The other guest was Dennis Wilkinson from Seddon CC, who had made a recent comeback after a long lay-off due to personal well-being issues. Seddon is proud to feature three teams in MAACA across all divisions.

Annabel and Will Sutherland light up the Taverners at our winter dinner event.
11 June, 2024
11 June, 2024
A strong gathering of over 60 people were highly entertained by our special Guest Speakers, Annabel and Will Sutherland. Australian Cricket selector, Tony Dodemaide introduced the pair with glowing accolades after main course. Our MC, Ron Steiner carried the audience on a journey through their short careers, from back yard bruises and tantrums, through to their State, BBL, WPL and International cricket experiences.
Update from MAACA
The evening commenced with Taverners welcome drinks on arriva, followed by a greeting from Stuart Stockdale who then invited MAACA President Stephen Lefebvre to the podium for an update on the Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association. Stephen outlined the growth of the MAACA competition and how important Taverners ongoing support was the their future needs. With 16 Clubs and over 300 players in an east and west conference, they look forward to onboarding 2 new clubs each year, which requires substantial initial support and training.
The generosity of your support has allowed Taverners Victoria to present MAACA $15,000 in the first of 3 years of our Partnership. However expenses and funding for the 2024/25 season is ongoing.
You can help with a Tax Deductible gift of just $60 to Sponsor a MAACA Player for 2024/25. Insights and Q&A with the Sutherlands
- Annabel and Will come from a talented, competitive sporting family.
- Both players could have succeeded in an AFL career but chose cricket.
- Younger brother Tom is a Scratch Golfer and aiming to go Pro.
- Both are very happy developing as All Rounders rather than being a specialist batter or bowler. It keeps them in the game for longer.
- Will has played 2 ODIs for Australia. His biggest goal is to play Test Cricket. He admits there are a lot of players ahead of him.
- With Australia's rotation policy to rest our best players, that opening may not be too far away according to Tony Dodemaide!
- Annabel has enjoyed some captaincy opportunities at high levels and like Will, is very happy to take on more.
- She feels blessed playing with many of the best cricketers in the world and is soaking up as much as she can from the likes of Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry.
- Will on bowling fast - as a kid this was his total obsession.
- Now after overcoming a back stress fracture, he is focussing on tweaking his action to improve and hoping to add a few extra clicks.
- There's great sibling rivalry driving each other on to improve and succeed. Huge bragging rights are up for grabs, particularly in the BBL between the Stars and the Renegades!

Merv Hughes' magic headlined the 2023 Boxing Day Breakfast with the audience under his spell.
26 December, 2023
Another excellent Taverners Breakfast delivered on all fronts
A strong turn out gathered early at the MCG to enjoy great company, food and insights from the cricketing journeys of the great Merv Hughes, Victorian Blind Cricket Captain, Ned Brewer-Maiga and All Abilities cricketer and poet, Dylan Owen-Buoy.
Richard Starkins was acknowledged for attending all 38 Boxing Day Breakfasts since inception and for becoming our latest Member for Life of Taverners Victoria. We are extremely grateful for Richard's outstanding support.
It was Merv who stole the show
In conversation with MC Ron Steiner, Merv candidly talked about his early sporting ambitions, wonderful cricket career, and his dream 30 years post playing, as a National Selector and a "Relevant Character" on the Cricket Speakers Circuit. Merv's huge heart and Aussie wit have made him so endearing to his cricket loving fan base.
Merv's generosity is just as large, as he never requested a fee for his appearances for The Taverners.
In Merv's own words ...
"I love what the Lord's Taverners do ... and how they go about it, it's been fantastic.
To give people with a disadvantage a hand up ... what they give back to people who love the game and want to progress, is fantastic."

Ned Brewer-Maiga Ned's teenage sporting journey was in full swing until the age of 19, when he lost 80% of his sight over 5 days. Retinitis Pigmentosa left Ned devastated with narrow tunnel vision due to the disease. With the support of Blind Cricket Victoria, he was able to learn a new way to play a game he was passionate about and with his natural athleticism, quickly came into prominence as a Victorian player.
Not long after in 2017, he was invited to join the Australian Blind Cricket Squad where he as be involved in the last four International tours. Ned has also represented Australia in Vision impaired soccer and plays Blind AFL football for Hawthorn FC where he also works. Ned is a big advocate of inclusion and is passionate about improving the lives and opportunities for people with a disability.

Dylan Owen-Buoy has played cricket for 25 seasons, starting at the tender age of 8. Dylan also lives with multiple disabilities. He has found great friendships and support through his team mates over his cricket career and greatly looks forward to his adventures on and off the field.
Below is the title poem from Dylan's recent book, published in 2022.
For Us The Kindred Spirits
Life to me is like an englazing cricket pitch
Bourn with singing rivers and enchanting fields
So when we enter into this mythical garden
Our very hearts are filled with happiness and brightness
I just love being out there It is such a soulful scene
For us the kindred spirits, it feels like gazing from afar
Our kind and competing souls will always possess me
People opening up, loving
Crowds cheering and commune-icating.

A Siddle, Fatone & Richards Hat-Trick
inducted to our Taverners Legends Hall of Fame
23 October, 2023
3 outstanding Victorians celebrated for their contribution to Cricket
Peter Siddle, Claudia Fatone and David Richards stories are varied but have left an significant mark on the International stage in the case of Siddle and Richards. The former as an outstanding medium-fast, workhorse or strike bowler for his State and Country, with 221 wickets in 67 Tests. His first wicket was Sachin Tendulkar in Mohali and he famously took an Ashes Hat Trick on his 26th birthday at the GABBA in 2010.
The later, David Richards served a 21 year period as the Chief Executive of Cricket Australia and then the ICC. He famously brokered peace talks with Kerry Packer to resolve the World Series Cricket Crisis and helped establish major sponsorships to greatly grow revenue for International Cricket fixtures and player payments.
As for Claudia Fatone, her determination to tackle issues and raise the standards and conditions of women's cricket at Metropolitan and State level took her to the top of the Victorian Womens Cricket Association. She co-ordinated their entry to Womens Premier Cricket, for First and Second XIs. She was the first woman to be on the Board of Cricket Victoria.
Claudia was interviewed by Ian Crawford former Taverners Victoria committeeman and Prahran CC legend. Claudia's great legacy can be seen in the professionalisation of womens cricket and the massive improvement in their cricket ability. Our top WBBL and World Champion women players can now focus full time on their cricket without having other employment pressures. Claudia still contributes to the development of Junior Girls cricket through coaching the Ringwood Under 12s A Grade team who compete for a Shield named after her. She is currently the CEO of Women's Legal Services Victoria which provides free legal aid to women facing sexual assault and family violence.

There was an excellent turnout at the 37th Taverners Victoria - Boxing Day Breakfast at the MCG this year. Our members and guests were treated to a special hour of Glenn McGrath recounting his cricketing development and his incredible focus to be the best bowler possible. We heard intimate memories around losing his great mates Shane Warne and Andrew Symonds as well as mentor Rodney Marsh, plus the inspiration and achievements drawn from the adversity faced by his first wife Jane, through the McGrath Foundation.
3 Year Partnership announced for All Abilities Cricketers
After a touching Welcome to Country from MC Ron Steiner, Chair Stuart Stockdale launched our new 3 Year Charity Partnership with Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association (MAACA) and introduced their President, Steve Lefebvre to the stage.
MAACA promote and run a 3-tiered competition for cricketers with an Intellectual Disability (ID) to compete against each other. In season 2022/23 there are 21 teams within 16 mainstream clubs across Melbourne and Central Victoria. Steve explained Taverners long involvement in Intellectual Disability cricket carnivals, MAACA's formation in 2015 and future plans to support and expand it's competitions. The majority of The Victorian Vikings who will represent our state at the NCICs play in the MAACA. This ground-breaking Association is a vital feeding program for our National and International ID cricketers.
A special mention was given to the boys from Ferntree Gully CC's All Abilities team, who were thrilled to be photographed with Australian cricket legend Glenn McGrath (below).

Taverners Rise to the occasion for a Stand up Auction
Following on from an engaging interview, 8 Glen McGrath autographed, Australian ODI Caps and a Stump, along with 3 autographed bats by Ashes Test and BBL Renegades players were auctioned off by Taverner, Warwick Burnham. Everyone in the room was upstanding. As the bids rose, the number of buyers decreased until the winning bidders were the last ones standing. Our successful bidders showed great generosity, raising valuable funds way above reserves.
The "King of Spin" smashed all expectations
The feature item offered was a handsomely framed King of Spin tribute to Shane Warne with a ball signed by the great man Warnie. Amazingly The King fetched a staggering $1,600 above reserve.
Champs "tons" up again with his greatest hits and cricket ditties
Seems the Taverners Boxing Day Breakfast is not complete without Tongue planted firmly in the Cheek of one Mr Greg Champion O.A.M. Endeavouring to milk the Demons Premiership afterglow, Champs kept the audience laughing with his sporting jibes and surprise twists, strumming away with guitar at hand.
A huge thank you goes out to all who attended and showed their generous support in purchasing Sporting Chance Raffle Tickets, Sponsoring a MAACA Player or buying a piece of cricket history/memorabilia at our two auctions.
Many thanks to Saktti Breen our Events and Partnerships Manager, and her supporting committee for a fabulous event.

Len King, Ken Eastwood and Superstar, Meg Lanning -
Our newest Victorian Legends ...
Umpire Len King officiated in 7 Tests between 1989 and 1993, (6 on-field and 1 as 3rd Umpire). Len also umpired 25 ODI’s (23 on-field), 35 First class matches, 6 Interstate One Dayers and 166 Premier 1st XI matches, with 7 of these being Finals.
Len described his Test umpiring debut, with the West Indies playing the Aussies at the SCG, as like having sex for the first time, only it lasted 5 days! David Boon scored a century and Alan Border took 11 wickets and made 75 runs to assist in a 7 wicket win for the home team.
Len was on the VCA Umpires Panel for 13 seasons and another 7 as a VCA Umpire’s Director up until 2000/01.
Ken Eastwood the Left hand Victorian Opener from 1959/60 to 1971/72 scored 2,722 runs for the Vics, including 2 double centuries, 177 and 164. In the 1969/70 season Victoria won the Sheffield Shield, Ken lead the scoring with 584 runs. Ken achieved the rare feat of scoring more 100’s than 50’s for Victoria, only equaled by Dean Jones.
"Easty" replaced Bill Lawry for his only Test appearance in 1971. While missing out with the bat, he picked up the wicket of Keith Fletcher bowling his Chinamen.
Ken’s massive contribution to Footscray CC includes multiple awards, being a 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI Premiership captain, Assistant and Batting Coach, net captain and long term committeeman. After retiring from playing District cricket at age 54, he umpired in the VTCA for 26 years, retiring at the age of 81.
Brad Hodge spoke on behalf of our 3rd Legend inductee, Meg Lanning who is taking a break from the relentless pressures of over a decade at the top of International Women’s cricket. He described Meg as one of the most elegant batters he has seen, an amazingly talented sportswoman taking time out in New York to sort out the next stage of her life at 30.
Little more needs to be said about Lanning's achievements, captaining Australia twice and winning multiple World Cup and World T20 titles is well documented. The future is a wait and see for Meg.
Congratulations to all our three latest Legends who have done Victorian Cricket very proud indeed.

99 Celebrate the 36th Taverners Boxing Day Breakfast
Pullman On The Park - Sunday 26th December, 2021
It was a delightful start to a most memorable MCG Ashes clash, hosted by M.C. Ron Steiner. Guests helped them selves to a hot buffet breakfast and headed to their tables to enjoy the proceedings.
Opening the innings was an affable, albeit one-eyed musical tribute to the Melbourne F.C., from comic maestro, Greg Champion. Greg rolled out all his hits and a few misses just for laughs.
Our Special Guest was John Emburey, talented England Off-spinner, controversial captain of two tests in 1988 and player in both South African Rebel Tours in the 1980s. Ron Steiner played an entertaining knock, rotating the strike with "Embers", who enthralled the crowd with his intelligent insights and observations, both current and past, from his distinguished international and first class career.
The pre-morning session was wrapped up by Taverners National President, Paul Sheahan, who spoke glowingly of our English guest and thanked the efforts of the organisers for putting on such a fine event. It was beautifully timed and wonderful to gather en masse after such a long COVID delay, for our Taverners members and supporters. We look forward to the next opportunity with fingers crossed it won't be too far away.

Taverners Victoria and ACS
2020 Christmas Luncheon
December 4th - featuring John Hastings
2020 Christmas Luncheon
December 4th - featuring John Hastings
Taverners Victoria and Australian Cricket Society are proposing a Christmas Luncheon be held on Friday December 4 at Leonda By the Yarra.
Leonda has assured us that all social distancing and correct health protocols will be in place. A minimum of 50 is required to proceed.
We have confirmed that 'one Test wonder' John Hastings (pictured above) is available to speak to us on the day. Our friends from ACS will also be handing out their annual awards.
The cost of the luncheon is $100 for members and $110 for non members.
To go ahead we would need to know by lunchtime this Friday if you wish to attend and if you would like to bring a guest.
Leonda is located at 2 Wallan Road, Hawthorn and is easily reached by car or tram, which goes directly outside the front door.
With guest speaker John Hastings, it should be a great event which needs the support of our members and friends to make it happen.
Please email Stuart Stockdale at [email protected] by lunchtime on Friday 20 November, so we can confirm numbers and see if this 2020 luncheon is possible.
Good wishes and hope to see you there.
