MAACA GRAND FINAL DAY - 2022:
Taverners Victoria along with Cricket Victoria, helping the Melbourne All-Abilities Cricket Association grow
By David Hayden. Video by Nicko Hancock.
Live action from the 2020/21 MAACA, Division 1 Grand Final between Croydon North and Williamstown CCs, on Sunday 14th March. Hosted by Moorabbin CC at Moorleigh Reserve, East Bentleigh.
Taverners Victoria, along with Cricket Victoria, is proud to support the Melbourne All-Abilities Cricket Association (MAACA). This culminates in the Div. 1 Grand Final, played between the two top sides of the Eastern and Western conferences.
Emma Staples, from Cricket Victoria said she just loves the passion displayed by these cricketers - "It rivals certainly, any Grand Final you could go to."
Taverners Victoria have been providing opportunities for cricketers with an intellectual disability to play cricket for over twenty years. The MAACA, which was established in 2016 is a highlight of this support. The idea was inspired by the Taverners Victoria, state run carnivals for Intellectually impaired cricketers, held many years ago in Casey Fields. The MAACA includes fourteen mainstream Clubs in Metro Melbourne and Regional Victoria with disability teams in their programs.
MAACA President, Stephen Lefebvre explains their aim is to continue growing by two to four clubs a year to allow more cricketers with an intellectual disability to feel part of a mainstream club, giving them the chance to put on the club colours and compete.
"It's about equality... these guys love cricket, they've got every opportunity to play cricket the same as we do ... and that's the best thing about it."
The other great benefit is that the Clubs' mainstream players learn to understand about All-Abilities and disability in general. It's a great outcome for cricket inclusion all round.
Taverners Victoria relies on the support of our members and their friends to continue to "Give a Sporting Chance".

Merv Hughes inducted into Cricket Australia Hall of Fame
2 February, 2021 - Compiled by David Hayden.
It is with great delight we report Taverners Victoria Legend and Hon. Vice President, Mervyn Hughes was elevated into the Cricket Australia Hall of Fame on 2 February, 2021. Merv becomes the 56th cricketer to join this elite group.
One of the great fast bowlers and characters of Australian cricket, loved for his fierce tenacity, bristling moustache and on-field antics, Merv’s career spanned from 1985-94, including 53 Tests and 212 Test wickets at 28.38 apiece.
In 1988, Merv produced his career best figures of 8-87 vs the West Indies in Perth, in the first innings. He snared the last 2 wickets with consecutive balls. With the loss of Geoff Lawson to a broken jaw in that game, Merv completed a famous Hat-Trick with his first ball in the 2nd innings, reflecting the strength and determination of the man. Merv claimed 13 wickets in all for the match.
After helping Australia retain the Ashes in the UK with 31 wickets in 1993, at the pinnacle of his career, Hughes was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year the following year. He had amassed 176 Test wickets over a 4 year span, more than any other international bowler during the same period.
Over 14 first class seasons Mervyn Gregory Hughes also represented Victoria, Essex and the ACT and played 33 ODIs for his country. He became a selector for the Australian cricket ream in 2005 through to 2010. His continued involvement in the game is well known.
Many fine accolades were stated at Merv’s induction to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame. These highlights appear on the Cricket Victoria website are well worth reading:
“Hughes’ influence on the game goes beyond showmanship – he was a cricketer and a character that drew people to cricket and made them love the sport. And underneath it all, he is a deep-thinker of the game who continues to be a mentor to future generations.”
Earl Eddings, Cricket Australia Chair, said:
“Merv Hughes is an Australian sporting legend who was one of the greatest bowlers to have played our national game”.
Greg Dyer, former teammate and Australian Cricketers’ Association Chair, said:
“A thoroughly deserved accolade for one of the most wholehearted cricketers of the 1980’s and 90’s. A fine fast bowler – quick and nasty in the best traditions of the breed.”
Congratulations Merv, very well deserved.

Cricket Australia Announce the Lord's Taverners as their
Charity of Choice
Cricket Australia CEO, James Sutherland and Lord’s Taverners Australia President, Paul Sheahan confirmed that a new partnership agreement has been signed between the two parties confirming the Lord’s Taverners as the leading partner of Cricket Australia’s A Sport For All programs.
At the Sydney Cricket Ground on 15 August, the Lord’s Taverners hosted a function confirming exciting prospects for the future of the Lord’s Taverners and their many beneficiaries around Australia.
Ex-Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist was confirmed as the first National Ambassador for the Lord’s Taverners following in the footsteps of his father Stan Gilchrist, who has committed countless years as a volunteer and giving back to young people living in disadvantage. Adam described his parents and their involvement in the NSW chapter of the Lord’s Taverners and their charitable work inspiring him to become the Taverners first ever national ambassador.
Long-serving volunteer and Lord’s Taverner John Jeffreys was appointed as the national chairman, following the retirement of Greg Brown.
In his first speech Jeffreys announced that the Lord’s Taverners has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. As a charity, this means the organisation can now establish the Sporting Chance Fund - a foundation in partnership with Cricket Australia dedicated to supporting young people living in disadvantage support and chase their sporting and cricket dreams.
The Lord’s Taverners Australia is a benevolent charity which does not aim to make profit and is entirely run by volunteers. Each year the volunteers and members that make up the Lord’s Taverners, distributes between $350,000 to $400,000 annually to young and disadvantaged beneficiaries.
The current Lord’s Taverners annual raffle which is in its tenth year is close to its milestone of raising $10 million.
In the coming months Cricket Australia will announce a day on the international cricket fixture dedicated to the Lord’s Taverners Australia and promoting the fundraising and great work of the Taverners in supporting the young and disadvantaged all over Australia.

Great time to become a member of the Victorian Taverners
The Lord's Taverners Victoria committee have been working very hard over the past few months, to look at ways of increasing our membership base and also looking at ways to add value to memberships for new and existing members.
Being a member of the Lord's Taverners is a great opportunity to share in your love of Cricket with others from a variety of backgrounds, including many who have played the game at the highest level. We run a series of functions throughout the year (with special pricing for members), culminating in the Boxing Day breakfast at the MCG, before the start of play on Day 1.
Best of all your membership goes directly towards supporting young people experiencing disability and disadvantage to engage in cricket, which is the pillars on which our organisation is based.
The Victorian Taverners is run fully by volunteers, who donate their time and resources to ensure that young people are given a sporting chance.
If you would like to become a member, then please click on the black button at the top of the page. If you would like more information about what we do and how you can get involved, then please email us at [email protected]

Casey Fields plays host to the tenth instalment of the Lord's Taverners Victorian All-Abilities Cricket Carnival.
A total of 19 teams from across the Victoria took part in both the Super League and Ten Over Tonk fixtures of the recent All-Abilities Cricket Carnival, with some very impressive cricketing talent on display. Cricket Victoria's Community Program Coordinator Emily O'Brien said that the day was a terrific event for all involved.
"The day was a resounding success, it was great to see many teams returning, as well as a number of teams entering for the first time," O'Brien said. "The visit from Melbourne Stars and Commonwealth Bank Victorian Bushrangers player Sam Harper was a highlight for many aspiring players, as he stopped to watch games and chat to participants."
The Super League title was taken out by the Yarraville Cricket Club who defeated the Croydon Ranges, while McCallum Magic took out the Ten Over Tonk competition over first-time entrant Shepparton Youth United Cricket Club.
O'Brien was full of praise for major sponsor Lord's Taverners, whose support was vital to the running of the carnival.
"The day could not be run if not for the support of the Lord's Taverners," she said. "Their sponsorship and common vision is vital to the success of the day, creating a fantastic sporting opportunity for underprivileged and disadvantaged young people."
The All-Abilities Carnival also plays and important role for selection of the Victoria Vikings All-Abilities team, which will represent the state at the National All-Abilities Championships in September. Selectors of the side will keep a close eye on Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association performances, as well as taking into consideration those who performed well in Sunday's carnival. The selected squad will be announced at the conclusion of the season, with players selected in the Vikings' squad to be treated to a High Performance Winter Training Program.
BBL franchises Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars have also thrown their support behind All-Abilities cricket, with an invitational squad from each team playing at the Renegades' Family Day last December - the Renegades team emerging victorious.
